Use only heavy cream: Always use heavy cream to make whipped cream. It works well due to the high fat content that provides a thick texture to the whipped cream and prevents it from becoming runny.  
Avoid over whipping: Do not over whip the cream as it will spoil the texture of the whipped cream and it would start to separate into butter or buttermilk. Whip only till the point when you feel that the texture is rich, smooth and creamy.
